If there’s another thing Richard Garriott knows, it’s how you can give a game legs. It’s super appropriate, then, that this man behind Ultima could have a few words to say on the current state of Pokemon Go, a mobile title that’s meant to keep players returning for more.
Richard Garriott accepted Twitter over the weekend to respond to a pretty simple question. One of his followers inquired why he chosen to quit playing Pokemon Go and the response was direct as well as the point.
It might appear to be Garriott contains the same issues many players have gotten with Pokemon Go, the breakout hit in the summer that men and women traveling in droves around the globe to gather virtual monsters. I said hello when the overall game launched and I’ll say it again, Pokemon Go is a good skeleton for the game, a good foundation on what to build something truly special. Unfortunately, many months later, none of this building has actually occurred.
In the months following your launch of Pokemon Go, the developers at Niantic do a good job of stabilizing the overall game, tweaking several features and offering an excellent initial lineup of Pokemon to trap in the wild. But despite the gym improvements plus the recently launched Halloween event, the fact with the matter is the fact Pokemon Go has never made like its titular critters and evolved. Maybe there’s huge coming, but we’re thinking individual additions and improvements released on a regular basis would’ve helped maintain your community invested.
Much from the gaming world looks like it’s of a similar opinion on the subject of Pokemon Go, including Garriott. Grinding in games is usually a tricky needle to thread. Two years into Destiny and Bungie remains to be fine-tuning that process. Heck, even Blizzard tweaks the leveling in World of Warcraft even today. The golden rule in the process, though, appears to be that it really needs to be engaging and rewarding. As Garriott shows, grinding levels in Pokemon Go takes much too long and, more to the point, there is not much advantage to putting in that effort from the first place.
Add to that particular his noted insufficient new and varied content, as well as a absence of much inside the way of “end game” activities this is not hard to learn why he and others have stepped outside the mobile giant.
Still, it appears like something as simple as a really basic Halloween-themed event has provided an excellent uptick for the experience, so fans clearly would like to get back into Pokemon Go providing they’ve been given good reason to do so. Hopefully, Niantic has some juicy stuff cooking, because we’d certainly like to see the sport become a great gift; an issue that I think many people were hoping for from your get-go.
