Fernando Torres: Jose Mourinho needs money to win trophies

ddFernando Torres has risked the wrath of his former manager by claiming Jose Mourinho relies on spending to win trophies.

Torres recently departed west London after failing to live up to that famous £50 million price tag. When Jose Mourinho arrived, Torres soon found himself replaced by Diego Costa, who cost £32 million from Atletico Madrid. The striker is now back at the Vicente Calderon trying to fill in for Costa and admits things are very different under Diego Simeone. When asked to compare the management styles between Simeone and Mourinho, Torres left reporters in little doubt.

He told AS: ”They’re very different. It’s difficult to compare, because it’s not the same being on a team where you have players you want, spend the money you want and after that they win, that’s what makes Mourinho.

“That’s not easy. And with Cholo (Simeone) the experience you have with Atleti is winning with other resources.

“I don’t know what Mourinho would do at Atletico or Simeone at Chelsea. What I like is that they are very intelligent to adapt to what they have.”

BALANCING THE BOOKS

Mourinho has been praised for balancing the books since he returned to Chelsea in 2013 for a second spell in charge. While he has spent vast amounts of money on the likes of Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic, he has also generated considerable cash through player sales.

David Luiz was sold to PSG for a reported £50 million in the summer while Andre Schurrle departed last month for £24 million. That has helped Chelsea to comply with Uefa’s financial fair play regulations whilst also keeping the Blues competitive.
