ELO Boost:Knowing your matchup
Why is it that some people who main a champion are able to reach Diamond 1 with their champion while others are stuck in Silver? This article discusses the importance of matchups and why picking a counter may not always be the best choice.
I’ve heard some people say, “If you want to gain elo, just main one champion and play that every game.” Why is it that this works for some people, while others still remain stuck? It all comes down to knowing how to play your champion in certain matchups. If you know how to correctly play the matchup, the worst you should be doing is going even. The ones who learn their matchups are the ones who are winning lane/going even and raising elo.
Counterpicking: Personally, I’ve never seen why it was so important to counterpick your lane matchup unless you’re really comfortable at the champion you pick. Picture this: You pick Elise into a Shen top lane matchup, except you’ve never played Elise before and you’re up against a person who mains Shen. Now let’s say you get ganked or misplay (because you don’t know how to play the champion effectively) and fall behind. What do you do then? At least if you were playing your main, you’d know what you can or cannot do while behind. The chances are with Elise, you’d keep falling further and further behind in a matchup you’re supposed to counter. Now what good is that? If you’re going to play a counter, at least KNOW how to play the champion you pick–and I don’t mean just 3 normal game worth of experience.
When I elo boost, I usually just play just one champion and carry. I don’t bother with counterpicks unless the champion is one I’m very proficient at.
Now, how should you learn these matchups?
One way to learn matchups and to certain champions is by watching streams. If you play ADC, watch Wildturtle/RobertxLee. If you play Mid, watch Scarra/Froggen. If you play top, watch Voyboy/Wingsofdeath/Wickd. Jungle, Saintvicious/Oddone. Support, Xpecial/Chauster. Copy their runes and masteries, and watch what they do and how they play against certain matchups. Look at when they go in to harass/gank and when they back off and farm. These are things that you should be trying to replicate, because even if you don’t replicate what they do completely, if you copy even a bit of it, you will become a better player.
